The Straight Curve Experiment # 2- Straight Wonky Blocks

I am taken the next step in my messy with the mind straight but not straight piecing adventure. After the Curve Shell experiment last month I got thinking what else could I do with this. Quilt is now finished.

Could I do this with blocks? Would the effect work over a small distance? I had some scraps left over so I cut a couple squares from the shell fabrics and strips from zigzag strip off cuts.  Let's play with an easy block so a framed block was the block that came to mind to try after I considered some other blocks. My mind always runs off ahead of me. This is what happened.

I did cut the strips and lay the block out before sewing to get some idea what the block looked liked and I want to keep the block balanced.

Of course once I started piecing the brain was working with the other ideas that were popping in, so I had to cut some  more Collective fabrics to try those ideas. The way I am going there maybe a series of quilts from these experiments. I have been so taken with these ideas I have give this experiment a name. From now on I will refer to it as  The Straight Curve Experiment. Who know where this may go. We will see where I end up.

Spiral Shells Curves.

On the 3rd March I attend a lecture by Kaffe Fassett when he was visiting Adelaide, South Australia. I knew a little bit about him through a friend who had attended his workshop last time he was here. It turned out to be a very inspiring evening learning more about him and how he see things. It also gave me a new appreciation for his fabrics. I have a very limited range of the Kaffe Collective fabrics in the shop as I couldn't work out the best way of using these fabrics. I have made a few cushions as shop samples but nothing really inspiring.

Something Kaffe said regarding what to do with such large prints- "cut it up." It stuck in my head. How to cut such prints is now sparking ideas in my head. I am still playing with ideas but I start on a reversal quilt using the 2 Spiral Shell and the zig zag fabrics in stock. What would happen if I cut the zig zag at a slight angle. What effects could I create?
Experiment #1
My straight borders don't look very straight now do they? It has created bent borders though I have straight seams.

Now to continue to playing with the ideas forming since I now have some ideas of what can happen. I may go a little cross eyed playing with these bent zig zags.

Cushion Time

Last week I shared an AQS tutorial on my Cynthia's Ark Facebook page on cushion making with a special tip for the corners. I was inspired to try it as there was some large scale Kaffe Collective 15 fabrics that had just arrived and I was wondering how to showcase them.

I choose 2 prints to start with.Though I want to make a cushion from each print. That may happen who knows! It didn't take me long to make the first one using the Chrysanthemum print. A long week and a little too tired to continue but I promised myself I will do the other one during the week.

On Tuesday night I cut the second one out and had it sewn up in no time using the Pansy print this time. The only problem I had was the cushion insert was a little smaller than what the packet claimed so my first cover was a little loose. Not too hard to fix.

I think I will find different cushion insert when I make some more, just not quite happy with the filling in these ones. The stuffing isn 't quite in the corners.
Visit my Cynthia's Ark Facebook page to find the tutorial.
