I have had a busy start to the year, so the plan was to do a small project. Placemats or maybe a small table topper was the plan. I picked the fabric and cut enough to sew a sample block to check I was happy with it.
At that point something happened! I found myself picking another striped fabric and cutting into that one along the first one. I needed more blocks. As you can see I started with the one on the left and then add the red one. Picture of bolts to prove I didn"t sew the red one.
Cutting /Sewing frenzy at this point. A Blissful sewing session happening. Chain piecing, the music going and so on.
This is where I got stuck. A border or no border? As I was sewing it I was thinking no border but then I thought a solid border and then maybe one of the stripes I used in the blocks as a border. Choices?
So I had a little give away for you. The prize is this striped bundle below -4 x 50cm width of fabric = 2 metre of fabric.
All you have to do to be in the draw to win this prize is let me know what you would do with the quilt top. Leave it as is, maybe add a border or two, you tell me what you think would look good. On the 1st March 2021 I will draw a winner for this prize from the comments left.

ReplyDeleteWow, you've been busy to make such a beautiful quilt. I would have put a red border around, and also the same red binding. You have to do what you like yourself.
ReplyDeleteI'd make it larger with a solid tan border with different size red circles scattered and the tan stripe as binding. A fun picnic quilt.
ReplyDeleteA border would make the top you made pop. It is a beautiful top and should be showcased. However in the end it is what you like that matters.
ReplyDeleteReally fun quilt! I think I wouldn't put a border on it, but I bet I'm in the minority with that opinion!
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt! Don’t you just love when you can get lost in what you are doing and end up somewhere beautiful? I would leave as is. I think a self flanged binding would look really neat-a white or light flange with a blue binding to bring out the blue in the stripes.
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is stunning as is but I would probably add a border. You could add a dark teal tonal border and applique a vine with the teal fabric that is in the quilt Add red flowers around the vine with the red fabrics in the quilt... then cut some leaves with your teal fabrics in the quilt, cutting them so they all are a little different or at least not all are alike... scatter them between the flowers. Hope I made sense. lol
ReplyDeleteI love what Thearica (above) suggested, but that seems like too much work for me to do. I would most likely add a red border. I am a longarm quilter. I like nice solid fabrics on the edges when I quilt. I love how you utilized the striped fabrics. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteI like how you used the striped fabrics. I would put a border on it, maybe a dark blue or even black, or dark brown with the same color for the binding. The dark background you have on your picture really makes the quilt pop. I don't think red would work it would make your red stripes be too busy and disappear in the design. Hope that makes sense.
ReplyDeleteHow fun that without realizing it, you went from a plan of a small placemat sized project and suddenly found yourself with a small quilt! I love the block that makes a striped square. I made a very fun quilt like that some years ago. Mixing your two block designs is fun.
ReplyDeleteLove your project. I would do a 2 1/2 inch stopper border with one of your smaller prints and then a larger 5 - 6 inch border with the red. Great job!!
ReplyDeleteWow, what creativity! I would never have seen these two fabrics work so well together! A solid light tan border with the red striped fabric used as the binding would finish this top, in my opinion, while keeping it a good size for a table. Looking forward to seeing the finished project. Thanks for sharing it.

I would probably not add a border, as the quilt looks great as is. I love the red pops of color.
ReplyDeleteI vote on putting on a border. Maybe using a rich chocolate brown ( hard to tell with the colors on the monitor). And then a dark red ( like in your stripe) for a binding. I like the way you usesd the the shapes in the red and browns to make the squares.
ReplyDeleteLove how the different blocks play off of each other. Great combination. I would probably go with a border with more of a tone on tone and a place for the eye to rest...but was you said, choices choices. That's the fun part of quilting. We can do whatever we want to. LOL.

ReplyDeleteI would do a small solid border, probably red, to give the eye someplace to rest, then do a wider striped border on the outside mitreing the corners to match the stripes.
ReplyDeleteI think I'd go with the reds as a border. This is a cute little quilt!
ReplyDeleteEasy to get carried away when the sewing bug bites! You get the final say in the border decision. A narrow dark border (navy or black) would be nice, and then something to make the quilt sing. I'd let the quilt tell me what it needs, as I try different options. You'll know when you see it.

ReplyDeleteThat quilt looks amazing, love the blue/grey/brown block, it really does contrast with the red.I'd go with a small coloured border then a larger one with one of the other striped fabrics as someone else suggested. Whatever you do, it will look lovely.
ReplyDeleteWow. That is lovely. I like borders. So I would put either a plain tan or red border and then bind it with that beautiful red material you have used in the quilt.
ReplyDeleteI thought the dark grey was the border, but it is just a backdrop. I think it would look good with a dark charcoal border. It brings out the background just enough to balance the reds.
ReplyDeleteI love what you did with striped fabric. I was first thinking this is what I needed to do and I'm so happy to see that someone did it! Love your quilt. What a fun quilt! I really like all those stripes! I would probably use solid borders, a narrow inner one and a wider outer one, but I would have to lay out fabrics to see for sure. Thanks for sharing!

ReplyDeleteI used your photo of this stunning quilt as a guide. I blocked off the background and felt that the piece wasn't ending. then I left the background on and squared it off and thought it was perfect. I think I would use a dark solid. Choosing from a color in the original block.
ReplyDeleteGreat quilt and so stripey. That pink fabric does look as though you'd sewn the strips together. My 2 cents worth says add borders. Probably a very small one in a light/off white color followed by a solid border. That last one would be either a color in the one block or the other, depending on which you wanted to highlight. Hmmm, maybe that's more than 2 cents worth. :)
ReplyDeleteThis is a great quilt top. I would probably add a red/pink border, then a smaller striped border followed by another red/pink one. But whatever you pick will be just right.
ReplyDeleteCynthia your quilt is so darn cute. We often forget how those striped fabrics can be made to play. You showcased them perfectly.
ReplyDeleteIf you like the size of the quilt, I wouldn’t add a border. I would do a flanged binding; a slim peek of perhaps the tan or teal and then red for the rest of the binding.
I think any borders would detract from the overall fun and motion of the blocks. 😄 Carol

I think a red border around it would be great--if you wanted it wider, maybe a narrow border of off white before the red.

I think no border. I have not done a quilt that way yet but I would try it here. Enjoy the process, whatever you decide!
